Highlights 1/18/13

News:

On Tuesday, I held a Safety Committee meeting for about 40 minutes.  There were a few things that came out of the meeting that I wanted to share with everyone.

Locking Classroom Doors - as a group we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of teaching with your door closed and locked at all times.  What I would like to see since we cannot lock the doors from the inside, is have teachers lock their doors before class begins so in the case of an emergency or drill, doors are already locked and teachers do not need to be in the hallway trying to lock a door.

ID's - the Middle School staff has been wearing ID's and the committee felt this was a good idea and would like to see HS staff wearing them as well.  Based on the committee feedback all HS staff should start wearing their ID so it is visible.  We have already implemented ID's for all substitutes.   If you lost your ID, please let Mrs. Doheny know so we can get you a new one.

Exit Doors - Doors being propped open by students and staff was brought up as a concern.   After Newtown, I spoke to the student body about propping doors open and reminded them not to open doors for anyone.  The office staff is being very diligent in having visitors stand in front of the camera, identify themselves and ask for the reason of their visit to the school before they are buzzed in.  The senior wing doors not locking properly was also discussed and Mr. Rand was made aware of it.

Staff Notification in Emergency Situations - The members of the committee thought it was something important that we put in place so in the case of an emergency at school, there was a way to communicate information to the staff, other then the PA system.  Everyone agreed that the easiest way would be some type of  text message system.   I will be looking into a few different options:  Remind101, Celly, Honeywell, Twitter  (As a side note, Remind101 and Celly are great tools for the classroom as well.)

Chain of Command - Everything can not depend on me to be everywhere and always here.  The administration will be working on creating a chain of command and reviewing our security plan next week.  Once updated, any and all revised security procedures will be sent out to staff.

Drills Are Done For A Reason - Everyone needs to take every drill seriously and hold students accountable to behave and act the proper way during drills and especially in the case of a real emergency.  We all might need to review with our classes that there is no talking, running, fooling around, etc.  Cell phones should not be used during drills so students can listen to directions and not be distracted.  However, in a true emergency situation, cell phones might be able to save lives.

Hall Passes - All students should be signing in and out of each classroom using the corridor pass log.   There should be a log per classroom posted by the clock or somewhere near the door.    There should also be a pass that students take with them when they leave your room.   For now individual teachers should create their own pass but I will work on creating school wide passes for each teacher.

Digital Learning Day @ WHS

Digital Learning Day

Guest Post by: Carla De Gironimo @DeGironimoc
Waldwick High School Language Arts Teacher

Waldwick High School will be participating in the second annual Digital Learning Day hosted by the Alliance for Excellent Education on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.  According to the New Jersey Department of Education, this day provides an opportunity to highlight the great lessons and activities teachers, librarians, principals, and district leaders are providing for students.

Since it is the Waldwick High School mission to educate and guide students to achieve their fullest potential, become lifelong learners, and be responsible, productive citizens in a global society, Digital Learning Day is the perfect opportunity for staff members to showcase the types of innovative activities they are using in their classrooms every day.

Last year, Waldwick High School’s participation in the event was extremely successful.  Digital projects ranged from AP Economics students participating in a collaborative inter-school blog to students working out using Nintendo Wii programs in physical education classes.  Prior to participation, staff members wrote summaries of the projects they had planned and posted them on a Google Document which was shared online.  To see this document, please visit Waldwick HS 2012 Digital Learning Day

This year, participation in Digital Learning Day is highly anticipated by Waldwick High School’s staff and administration.  Teachers are encouraged to begin thinking about digital projects and activities that can be incorporated into their lesson and unit plans on February 6th

Collaboration among colleagues as well as across districts becomes more accessible each day due to the district’s dedication to embracing technology in its schools.

Interested teachers can find free tools and examples on the following site: http://www.digitallearningday.org/participate/educators/.

For the Waldwick HS staff, please use this Googledoc to input your lesson/project/event for Digital Learning Day.  Like last year one of the organizers would like to know what Waldwick HS has planned for the day.  I need to know who is involved and what you have planned by Friday, January 25th.
Please register for Digital Learning Day by click on the link below and filling out the form.

There is a new website that has recently launched called NewJerseyEducation.com.  The goal of the site is to provide a single source for NJ educators to go to for news, PD resources, jobs, conferences, etc.   The site was created by Jeff Bradury who also runs the Teachercast Webpage which is a site that contains some great resources.  Both sites also have Twitter accounts:

Ahead of the Curve and Looking Forward

The blog post below was originally posted on The Innovative Educator Blog.  The black text is the original post my comments are in red.

Here are my predictions for the five most popular technology solutions we’ll begin seeing more of in 2013.

1) Lifting the ban
Policymakers will stop banning and start embracing the use of cell phones and other student-owned digital devices in school. This will help provide equity and access to students using the tools they use in life and need for success in the world.
We started doing this at Waldwick HS how many years ago??  The cell phones/smart phones that our students are carrying around are very powerful mini-computers.  We have only touched the surface of using the power of these devices and in 2013 I hope you consider challenging yourself to find ways to incorporate them more into your lessons.   We have plans to improve our wireless network that will allow more students to bring tablets, laptop and other devices that will be able to connect to our wireless network.

2) Customizing learning with digital lectures and learning resources
Innovative educators will realize that instruction can be customized to learners when lectures and other learning resources are available anytime, anywhere, to anyone that needs them. These classrooms will look very different with students moving at their own pace using materials customized to their needs. The teacher will be able to focus more time on supporting individual students and small groups.

We have done this by having more student centered class activities, interdisciplinary projects, the BluePrint course and the use of digital tools (edmodo, Twitter, Naviance, etc) that have taken the learning outside the classroom.

3) Embracing social media
Schools and districts will realize the importance of empowering students to responsibly use social media. These pioneering districts will be examples of what happens when we support students in effectively using the resources they need for academic, career, and citizenship success.
I think we have this one covered.  Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Blogging, etc have all been a big part of WHS for a few years now.
We also talk to our students about the importance of "Digital Citizenship".
  • We have 15 teams/clubs currently using Twitter - List of WHS Twitter Accounts
  • We have 27 staff members (That I know of) on Twitter
  • Our YouTube channel has over 61,000 views.

4) Providing home internet access

Home internet access will start to be seen as a right rather than as a privilege. School districts will begin working with internet providers to offer special rates and packages to students who qualify for subsidies such as free lunch.

This one does not really apply to the Waldwick Community.

5) Going paperless

Schools and districts will re-allocate resources away from paper and toward digital solutions. Savvy decision makers will find ways that this can save schools money as they realize savings in reduced costs of items such as textbooks, copy machines, toner cartridges, etc.
We started this over five years ago with: Google Docs, Google Forms, Naviance, Genesis GradeBook, Copy Machine Scanners, Web Pages, Turnitin, WebAssign, The Source @ WHS.
We have a class piloting Kindles and we continue to have conversations about what role the "Textbook" will play in the future.

Why did I share this with you, because we have so much to be proud of and we have been ahead of the curve for years when it comes to technology integration.   We all have worked hard to create a positive learning environment for our students as well as develop a school culture that revolves around: RESPECT, LEARNING, SHARING AND A TRUE LOVE FOR TEACHING.
Let's continue to work together, look forward and "Make it Happen" in 2013.
